At the PAC meeting held on 5/9/'08, Kitty Mitchell, Larry Small, Karen Wagner and I looked at some of the programs and procedures that had been implemented following the study of previous Pos. Action Committees. The development of alternative help programs such as the Alternative High School (now located in Corinna) and the employment of Alternative Tutors at each jr. high and Nokomis, were key accomplishments in deterring dropping out.
Sadly, the Alternative Tutors were dropped, or the position (in the case of Nokomis) was absorbed into other approaches. These tutors focused in on the students(non Spec. Ed.) who: 1. had attendance issues 2. were markedly behind in reading skill 3. had behavior problems.
Also, discussed was a plan to identify and follow the at-risk 7th graders in the district in order to study the key factors in dropping out. Geting real, hard data on this is a goal for those that met on 5/9.

To follow up on my previous comment, I should note that our Alternative High School does take Special Education (IEP) students. The Alternative tutors did not due to the availability of resource/guided study that is provided for IEP students.
Lets try to break down some percentages of dropouts that will enlighten as to the representation of Spec. Ed., 504, pregnancy etc.
